South Africa has been under lock down for just over a year already and within weeks from when it first started it came to my attention very quickly how many less fortunate people out there are battling just to put a cup of soup on the table when they working. Within 3 months I already had 6 families I was taking food parcels to, made up to be enough for a decent meal every day for 7 days for how ever many members there are per house. it is now March 2021 currently we supply 11 Families weekly with food parcels feeding a total of 52 people.
There are still daily people who are also clearly hard hit by the pandemic and they have either lost there jobs or had to take such a big cut to their salaries one can understand why these people are going hungry. I am really hoping to meet our target in which case we will be able to support an extra families with a weekly food parcel so they to can enjoy one meal a day.
also in order to qualify for a weekly food parcel we first visit the applicants home to see exactly how things are run and also to make sure the people who we are helping are genuinely affected and not just taking a chance at getting a free food parcel.
food parcels cost between R800 and R1200 per parcel once a week and consist of basic food items like tin foods, pastas, maize meal, flour, yeast, veggies, soya mince, bread, milk, coffee, sugar, soap and concentrated cool drink mix.
Everything is sourced and bought from the cheapest suppliers so we are able to give our families a bit more and a bigger food pack rather than smaller packs which equals smaller meals.
