This is Wednesday! (Inspired by the The Addams Family in case you were wondering) My green eyed baby girl.
Wednesday is a 9 week old Pitbull puppy who I got when she was just short of 4 weeks as her mom ran away and she needed to be nursed by bottle. For the first 2 weeks of having her at home she was what I thought perfectly healthy but got sick all of a sudden. After 4 vet visits over the space of 3 days, Wednesday was finally admitted to Panorama Veterinary Clinic on 27th January 2019. After a series of tests, Wednesday was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis.
Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease in dogs, usually carried by the brown dog tick. It can be divided into three stages: acute (early disease), sub-clinical (no outward signs of disease), and clinical or chronic (long-standing infection). Wednesday is currently at the acute stage. This stage consists of fever, swollen lymph nodes, respiratory distress, weight loss, and bleeding disorders.
Wednesday suffered from a high fever (which is now gone) and low blood count. Her blood count is below normal and decreases and increases day by day. Her weight has decreased from 3kg to 2.1kg. The disease has unfortunately attacked her joints as well so she struggles to stand or walk. She is currently on Doxycycline antibiotics and getting 5 injections per day as well as on steroids for her joints. She is also doing physiotherapy in order to get her legs strong again.
Wednesday is currently stable and has good and bad days. Although her blood count is still not where it should be, she is trying to stand more and walk which is a good sign. She is also eating and drinking on her own and loves Biltong and Meatballs. Doctors say that she has a very good chance of recovery and that we should continue in hospital care however it is getting quite expensive. I did take out medical aid but unfortunately it could only begin once she was 8 weeks and has a 30 day waiting period which means it only kicks in March and because she has already been diagnosed, the medical aid won't cover.
I have spent over R20000 thus far on medical bills and is ongoing as she is still in hospital but unfortunately am coming to a point where I can no longer afford it. I have decided to start this fundraiser to help cover the medical bills to come as I wouldn't want to euthanise her because I can't afford to continue giving her treatment, especially when she has a chance of recovery.
Wednesday means a lot to me and is already a big part of my life thus any help would be much appreciated. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.
