This is Miruna and she is 1 year old. Miruna is a Romanian little girl who was born with a very rare neurological congenital condition, the Sturge-Weber Syndrome, characterized by a facial Port Wine birthmark and varying degrees of glaucoma/and or seizure disorder. One or more of the following symptoms may result: seizures, developmental delays, glaucoma, paralysis, migraines, ischemic stroke, tissue overgrowth, endocrine issues, organ irregularities, partial loss of visual field. Although each case is unique, little Miruna already experiments a quite severe manifestations of the syndrome: besides the obvious facial birthmark, she has already had an eye surgery (for glaucoma) when she was only 6 weeks old and in the past months, her general health condition has aggravated, particularly due to frequent epileptic seizures, which decrease her chances to a normal life. Due to the fact that a lot of her left cerebral hemisphere is covered in angiomas (blood vessel growth on the surface of the brain) doctors have recommended a surgical procedure in which her left cerebral hemisphere would be removed (hemispherectomy). If this brain surgery is not performed as soon as possible, chances are her “healthy” cerebral hemisphere (the right one) will also be affected and there’s nothing to be done after that point. Although this is a very rare and risky surgery, there are increased chances of neurological and psycho-motor recuperation and the sooner it’s done, the better. Doctors from two clinics from the UK and Germany, who had already successfully treated a lot of similar cases have confirmed the diagnosis and would be willing to take Miruna’s case and perform the much needed surgery. However, the surgery’s costs abroad are extremely high for Miruna’s family and this is why we need your help with your donations! Thank you very much! :)
