Update 19th December 2017:
combined with the offline donations, we have reached a total of CHF 1960 in donations. This is absolutely fantastic!!! All the money has been sent to Samwel this week and I am ending the campaign - very grateful. Thank you all so so much for your support and your love. Watch this space for updates & pictures of the water tank!
Have you ever thought about where your drinking water comes from?
No? Then you're not the only one.
People on Rusinga Island in Kenya certainly haven't, because they don't have any. You can now help funding a water tank to provide clean drinking water for school children.
Samwel is a teacher and set up a primary school for children who can't afford to go to public schools in 2016. His aim is to support the local communitiy through education which will help them to escape poverty. Thanks to fundraising efforts from volunteers, he built the school and has been able to provide school uniforms, tables, chairs and books for the children. Now the next project is to fund a water tank to collect rain water. Roof gutters will be installed at the roof of the school to divert the water into the water tank. The water is converted into drinking water by adding drops of WaterGuard, a dilute sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) solution used to disinfect water.
Why? Families on Rusinga Island in Western Kenya do not have access to clean drinking water. The village’s only source of drinking water is Lake Victoria, but the unclean water is the cause of many waterborne diseases. Safe drinking water reduces the risk of diarrheal diseases – a main cause of mortality on the island.
How will the money be used?
- $900 for a 5000-liter water tank incl. transportation
- $200 for the roof gutter
- $100 for concrete and building materials
- $200 for technicians to install the water tank
- $100 for Waterguard chemical to make water drinkable and other expenses
All money will go straight to Samwel and he will invest it into the school. I have stayed with Sam and can say that he is a very trustworthy, kind and humble person who is committed to improve life for the community.
If we don't help them, then who will?
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
