Campaign Story
This project stems from work that I was involved with in 2015 when I went to work in Kenya for three months in a small Maasai village called Loitokitok. I worked for the Kenya Red Cross branch in the village and while I was there I was introduced to the amazing work of a group of local women who rescued young girls (as young as 9, 10 and 11) from early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) which is still a common practice among the most rural traditional Maasai tribes. These amazing ladies, called the Eduet women, are a credit to their community and one of their ways to generate income so that they can rescue girls and provide them with simple shelter, food, water and education is a small holding farm and the sale of traditional jewelry at the market. Kenya faces regular water shortages and this year has experienced a terrible drought. The ladies group have really suffered because they do not have adequate water storage systems in place for when it does rain to care for their crops. During December 2017/January 2018, myself and my partner Ryan (who is a builder), installed 2 10,000L water tanks for the women so that they can continue to rescue vulnerable girls. This was really successful and will enable the women to have more water for the girls however it is not enough water to make them completely self sufficient and to be able to expand as a community project.
We want to drill a borehole for the community which is due to cost at least £9000. £9000 is a very low fee for this type of work and will be done using a local company plus the help of community volunteers. Any money that we can raise would be much appreciated so that we can fund this project. Any donations of over £50 will also receive some handmade Maasai jewellery which will be hand picked especially for you. The ladies would love to develop a market for their jewellery.
If you need any further details about the project please don't hesitate to contact me.
I have a project blog which provides information about our previous work which was to install 2 10,000L water tanks for the women. https://jadelesleywilkes.wixsite.com/myfirstatlas.
