AURORA V. REALIS?

What first comes to mind when talking about Virtual Reality? Goggles? New technology? Interaction? Games? Alternate Realities?
Contrary to popular belief, virtual reality (also known as VR) has been around longer than we can imagine and has been popularized in last decade. It has been used by Steam and other platforms to create super-immersive games making the users believe that they have been transported to a whole other universe.

Virtual reality has been used, all around the globe, as a remedy for different medical issues. For instance, in Paris, a psychologist, called Alexandra Rivière, uses VR for the treatment of phobias, or even the Cedar-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles has been using it for pain relief. The uses are now widespread, and yet we do not hear about it very often.

The idea that such a tool can both entertain and heal is somewhat surprising, yet deeply interesting. That is why, we have decided to take on a project that will connect both.
With the help of Dr. Dozhwal-Bagot and the Centre Eugène Marquis in Rennes, France, we are trying to build a series of videos, pictures, sounds and 3D worlds that will ease the patient’s anxiety and entertain him/her. While we want to bring the project to other hospitals, because we are students in Rennes, we have settled on our town’s hospital (now if you’re the head of a hospital and willing to help us bring it to yours, you can email me anytime *wink wink*).

In terms of content, we had the idea of creating photospheres which could allow the patient to look around, and discover new places. Can you imagine visiting Paris without getting out of bed? Well, that’s the goal. Because the patients are confined to a restricted place and cannot escape their own reality, making them travel through Virtual Reality goggles would allow them to forget the situation they are in, but it would also make time go by faster. While some patients may want to undergo a cultural experience, others would probably simply relax and enjoy some time at the beach. That is why we want to create as many universes as we can possibly can, preferably ones the patient can chose; using different media and tools.

THE CENTRE EUGÈNE MARQUIS

Based in Rennes, France, the centre Eugène Marquis one of the 18 centres which fight Cancer (aka CLCC). Declared of public utility, the centre focuses its activity on 5 main therapeutical fields: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and interventional radiology and nuclear medicine. Research and education are the essential components of the centre's activity as it is partnered with the Université de Rennes. The surgeons, doctors and scientists of the healthcare establishment are involved in innovating projects of fundamental researches and clinical trials, aiming at improving prevention, diagnostic and treatment of cancerous pathologies.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

We are trying to find as much funding as we can: the cost of cameras, and VR sets cost much more than we can personally afford. That is the reason why we need your help. While we have some of the equipments and tools, others remain expensive on a student budget.
For the techno-savvy, virtual reality fans and whoever might be interested information, we are going to have to use the Oculus Go set (https://www.oculus.com/go/) for it has a better manageability and does not require a computer. All of the videos and entertainment can be handled by the goggles - no wires are required.

For all of your inner cameramen, we are going to use the insta4K for 360° degrees videos, or a six cameras in order to create the 360 effect (such as GoPros). As for the photographers, in order to create photospheres, we are using a wide-angle lens, and a dslr camera and the software PTGui.

Because we want the immersion to be complete, we are also going to be using binaural beats, which are an auditory illusion perceived by the brain when two slightly different frequencies of sound are played into each ear, thus creating an hypnotic experience.

But all of those tools are not the only elements you will be investing in. We are three student determined to make the life of those people better; we want them to enjoy traveling and escaping reality with the best content and quality possible, and make the experience worth of their time.
