Hello & Thankyou so much for taking the time to visit my page!
So you're probably wondering what all this is about? Well for those of you who don't know me that well, I am a third (final) year student nurse, studying BSC(Hons) Adult Nursing at London Southbank University. My nursing campus is based in Harold Wood, Essex. In our final year we are given the time to take part in an elective placement; in a chosen area that will enable us to broaden our skills, knowledge and expertise and work in an area that we may not necessarily be able to in the normal curriculum of our degree.
Where and when?
For my four week experience I have chosen to go to Tanzania. This will be from Monday 13th April 2015 to Friday 8th May 2015. A little bit about it... Unlike many African countries, whose wealth contrasts with their actual poverty, Tanzania has few exportable minerals and a primitive agricultural system. Yet prior to 2009 Tanzania had experienced steady economic growth largely due to strong gold production and tourism. However, a high population growth rate poses a significant challenge. Roughly half of Tanzania's population is aged 15 years or younger, which has created an unmet demand for youth employment. The result is that Tanzania remains one of the worlds poorest countries in terms of per capita income and of course the health of the population is negatively affected. Like many African countries Tanzania faces an acute shortage of healthcare workers. Low pay, poor working conditions and limited training programs contribute to the problem, whilst the rising burden of HIV/AIDS treatment greatly amplifies the situation. Unfortunately, health standards in Tanzania have declined so much that it trails most other developing nations.
So how will I help?
As part of the plan for this experience I will be volunteering in a Government district hospital. As mentioned before Tanzania has an acute shortage of healthcare workers resulting in healthcare standards being poor and unmanageable. I would like to use my time, and share knowledge I have gained so far in my studies to aid the work and provide nursing care along with other medical professionals already working there. I will be working in areas such as General medical consultation, HIV/Aids awareness and testing, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Pre-natal care, Minor/Major surgery, Newborn care and immunisations and the Tuberculosis wing. I would like to make a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged people.
So why Tanzania?
This elective opportunity has been a much anticipated part of my nursing degree and I see it as the chance to learn more about myself, my capabilities as a student nurse and push my boundaries to work in a different environment to the one I am used to. I feel that going to Tanzania will allow me to understand medical care from an entirely different side and enable me to develop my own nursing skills without the help of specialist equipment and resources to the ones we are used to in the NHS. I believe that there is always something to learn from others and expertise that I will undoubtedly acquire in a Tanzanian medical setting will be transferable to my practice in the UK upon my return. Equally as important I believe that I will grow even more as a person being able to experience the life and culture, even if just for a month, in a place so diverse from the UK. I feel that this life changing experience will me an even better nurse in the future and I hope that you will agree!
So why am I asking for sponsorship?
Like my placements allocated by the university in the UK this experience will be unpaid, I work full time hours, alongside other healthcare proffessionals to provide care to those who need it.This trip will be the same, and entirely self funded. This will include a fee to the organisation Plan My Gap Year. This is a non-government funded organisation who specialise in arranging safe volunteering opportunities. This fee includes my accomodation in a shared volunteered house near to the Government district hospital. I will also need to pay for my return flights. This is NOT a charity and any money donated would go entirely on the Plan My Gap Year fee and the flights to get me there and back home again!
I would be so grateful for any donation, no matter how small it may seem! Please help me to get there and change the lives of others!
Again, Thankyou so much for your time, and any donation you make!
Lots of Love Jamie x
Ps. Whilst I am there, I will also be visiting an orphanage nearby to the hospital, I would like to take some appropriate gifts for the children living there, if you would like to donate a gift for these children please contact me personally, or via facebook/twitter/email to find out what gifts would be appropriate for the children. If donations exceed my target I will buy gifts for the children with this money.
