Volunteering trip to Sri Lanka

Hello all!

Firstly, thank you for visiting my "gogetfunding" page!

So, this summer I have booked to go to Sri Lanka for one month from the 31st of May, to volunteer in a childrens orphanage, among other projects, with PlanMyGapYear (PMGY). Eek!!

For those of you who don't know, PMGY is an award winning organisation supporting volunteer projects in 15 countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. It was founded by volunteers for volunteers, and is an independent social venture, not a corporate machine. PMGY's volunteers become part of something really special, working together with local communities in the developing world to actualise long-term sustainable goals. PMGY recognise that travel can be meaningful, and that everyone has something to give and that we can make a positive impact.

My time in Sri Lanka will be mostly used to support both boys and girls homes, where the children range from 6 to 16 years old. My role at the the orphanages will be centered on teaching, helping to prepare and serve meals, and assist with the day to day needs of the orphanages. Many of these children have lost one or both of their parents, and others come from broken families or single-parent families who struggle to provide education and food for their children. PMG also supports a charity nearby that provides care to elderly women, where I plan on spending any extra time that I may have aside from volunteering in the orphanage.

My mum has described me as being "scared of my own shadow", and just so you all know, I do require valium to board a plane (prescribed - of course!). You can be assured that for me to go through this (horrific) 20 hour travelling experience, it is definitely going to be worthwhile (and although it is hard for me to admit, even worth the 11 vaccinations that I will have completed by the time I leave. 2 down - 9 to go! Ouch).

Just so you are all fully convinced that I am dedicated to this cause, I will be running the "3K on the Green" at Glasgow Green on the 25th of April. All proceeds raised from the entry fees from this will go towards "Help the Hospices", and all proceeds I raise will go towards this project. Anything over and above my target will be donated to the orphanage and the other supported charities, to improve conditions and use in a way that will be beneficial for them. Just to add - I haven't ran a day in my life since the 3K fun run at school (where I admit - I missed a lap. We all did it!!), so this is going to be a hilarious experience for those watching and quite possibly a grim one for me.

So I would love to ask all you truly generous people out there if you could spare a few (or even one!) pennies for this cause! It will help me out in getting there, and it will provide these children with some of the help they need, and hopefully brighten up their lives a little bit! Honestly any donation - even one penny, I wasn't joking - will literally be so unbelievably appreciated! Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and I promise the facebook pictures which will follow in July will not disappoint!

Thank you so much!!
