Campaign Story
Hi everyone,
Thanks for visitng my page!
So basicailly I have booked to go to Sri Lanka for a month over May and June to volunteer in an Orphanage with PlanMyGapYear (PMYG). It will be an amazing and rewarding experience for both me and the children and i cannot wait!!! :DĀ
For those of you who don't know, PMGY is an award winning organisation supporting volunteer projects in 15 countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. ItĀ was founded by volunteers for volunteers, and is an independent social venture, not a corporate machine. PMGY's volunteers become part of something really special, working together with local communities in the developing world to actualise long-term sustainable goals. PMGY recognise that travel can be meaningful, and that everyone has something to give and that we can make a positive impact.
My time in Sri Lanka will be mostly used toĀ support both boys and girls homes, where the children range from 6 to 16 years old. My role at the the orphanages will be centered on teaching, helping to prepare and serve meals, and assist with the day to day needs of the orphanages. Many of these childrenĀ have lost one or both of their parents, and others come from broken families or single-parent families who struggle to provide education and food for their children. PMG also supports a charity nearby that provides care to elderly women, where I plan on spending any extra time that I may have aside from volunteering in the orphanage.Ā
Flying is not my strong point (ask anyone who has been on a plane with me) and the 11 vaccination before hand is also not exactly ideal (2 down, 9 to do- owchiee!) However, i am convinced it will be worth all worth it in the end!
So basically to raise a few pennies towards this incredible adventureĀ I will be running the "3K on the Green" at Glasgow Green on the 25th of April. All proceeds raised from the entry fees from this will go towards "Help the Hospices", and all proceeds I raise will go towards this project. Anything over and above my target will be donated to the orphanage and the other supported charities, to improve conditions and use in a way that will be beneficial for them. I think now i should mention that i truely detest running but due to the cause i'm going to push myself (possibly in a wheelchair) accross the finish line!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. It is going to be such an exciting experience and i hope it encourages others to maybe applyfor themselves as to do so in its self will help people less fortunate than us! but if you are feeling extra generous i would greatly appreciate a few pennies or pounds (whatever you can afford) to help me along this journey! Truely anything will be appreciated andĀ I promise the facebook pictures which will follow in July will not disappoint! :D:D
Thank you again!
Katie xx :D
