In June 2019, I am flying out to Hoadedhdhoo, an Island in the Maldives.

My aim is to change how people perceive beautiful holiday islands. Holiday Destinations such as the Maldives have a delicate balance of the Eco-system. Tourism, natural disasters and global warming have a tremendous impact on the Maldives. Without even realising, so many people exploit these Islands, and take all they can from them, I would like to change that and give something back.

Through the organisation 'Plan my Gap Year' I will participate in a wide range of activities while learning about the cultures and day to day life of the locals.

'Plan my Gap Year volunteers will be introduced to a wide variety of different projects including the formation of mangroves, recreation of outer lying reefs, sea life and coral surveys, waste management and renovation work for housing, religious centres and community structures of Hoadedhdhoo.'

If you were to research the Maldives, you would find endless pictures of beautiful sandy beaches, stunning holiday resorts and incredible snorkelling opportunities. What you probably won't come across are pictures of the beaches which are specifically used to hold rubbish, or see images of masses of rubbish being burned and polluting the atmosphere. During my time in the Maldives, I will spend time cleaning these beaches and protecting the sea life from pollution.

Due to the humidity and limited structural resources, the housing, religious structures and community buildings get worn down and aren't always in good shape. With help from the locals, I will participate in a renovation project to restore the buildings and make sure they are safe areas to live in and visit.

I've always been passionate about Sport and fitness, and have loved leading fitness classes. While in the Maldives I will be able to use my skills to lead sport and fitness lessons. After spending time learning Dhivehi, I will be given the opportunity to teach English to locals of Hoadedhdhoo.

Overall I hope to gain a lot from this trip, and have memories which last a life time.
