What Do I Need Money For?

My name is Nicolina and I am volunteering in Thailand during the summer of 2014 with a program called EDventure International.  EDventure International is an amazing program that sends students overseas for 3 weeks to volunteer in communities that are in need of help. Volunteering through EDventure International makes volunteering overseas easier, the program provides transportation in Thailand, a place to stay every night as well as food, and building materials for the projects.

I will mainly be teaching children in rural schools in the mountains of Thailand. But I will also help build things in the local communites such as waste disposal systems and access roads to and from the villages to help the villagers gain access to schools and other necessities because during the rainy season the villages often become isolated.

Also, Thai people have a strong connection with elephants and elephants in Thailand are endangered because of poaching and habitat loss. I will be volunteering in the forests in Eastern Thailand by rebuilding habitats for elephants and helping rehabilitate the elephants by taking care of their basic health care and gathering food for them. This provides a highly valued and appreciated service for the Thai community. The volunteer projects help protect the elephants while educating the local community on how to take care of and treat the elephants.

Where Will the Money Go?

I want to raise an approximate total of $5200. The program costs add up to $3500 which cover my transportation while I am in Thailand, my food and shelter, and most importantly, the material costs for building various things in the community. I will need approximately $1500 for the flights to and from Thailand. I will also need $200 for vaccinations, my passport, and travel insurance in case anything happens on the trip.

How Will the Money Help?

Anything donated will help. I am a full-time student at Western Washington University and I do not have very much extra money. I am working two part-time jobs in order to pay for my expenses and tuition and to help save as much as I can for Thailand. Any amount of money donated will lessen the time I have to spend working and help me focus on school and coming up with other ideas to raise money such as bake sales and will allow me more time to actually put on these fundraisers.
