I have come to the end of my medical degree, the last 3 years of which have been spent on clinical placements in various NHS hospitals in the UK.

Before I embark on my career as a Junior Doctor this summer, I am undertaking a volunteering opportunity working in St Joseph's hospital in Moshi Tanzania for 4 weeks in May, assisting the medical team in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics.

Volunteering contributes vital resource to understaffed hospitals, which is critical because Tanzania has an acute shortage of health care workers, with one of the lowest global medical personnel rates.

Only 54% of the population have access to improved drinking water and only 24% have access to proper sanitation.

Over 7 million children are dying each year from preventable and curable diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea and malnutrition.

Maternal mortality rates are 3 times the global average - largely due to preventable complications during pregnancy and birth such as pre-term delivery or lack of oxygen at birth.

I have funded my flights and accommodation, however I am fundraising specifically towards costs of:

- Volunteer visa

- Vaccinations

- PPE (gloves, aprons, face masks)

- Surgical scrub masks

- Surgical scrub caps

- Surgical scrub gowns

- Gifts for paediatric patients supplied from local businesses

I will be documenting this journey and look forward to keeping everyone updated with my experiences!

Thank you for your donation- let's give a little to those who don't have a lot. X
