Sri Lanka 2014

This summer a group of six 16-17 year old girls (Danielle,Lily,Abby,Ruby,Ellie and Abi),will be travelling to the small town of Ambalangoda, situated in South West Sri Lanka, in order to volunteer for three weeks, as part of several community projects.

We will be working with and behalf of an organsiation (PMGY) which aims to offer an oppurtunity for young people, with time on their hands, to gain experience abroad, whilst also having a lasting benifical impact on the lives of others a long way from home. And what could be more rewarding than working in a place that has not only been torn apart by the disaster of the 2004 Boxing day Tsunami, but also civil conflict in the North East of the island, both of which have left an unsettiling effect among the Sri Lankan people and boken families and destroyed the future of many innocent people.

The projects which we will be a part of include; a week of either medical internships or teaching English to Buddhist Monks; followed by a week of caring for those in the local orphanage and providing some education as well as assisting those working there and then finally a week of restoration and construction to local buildings. The projects are intended to provide aid to those who truly need it, with not only attention and care whilst we are there but also more permanent support of education or renovation that the people of this country so desperatley need.

We all feel that this would be an unbelievable experience and are therefore keen to raise as much money as possible to not only cover the costs of flights, accommodation,vaccinations but also to be able to provide fees for buliidng materials and funding for the projects to be sustained.

As part of our fundrasing we will be walking the bridges of London to raise awareness of our cause and hopefully in order to gain sponsorship to cover some of the costs mentioned above.
