Volunteering in India – Women Empowerment and Orphanage Project

I have the opportunity of volunteering in Faridabad, India. Here, I shall be involving myself in a women empowerment project and also in an orphanage. With my trip taking place in Easter 2017, I aim to raise £1000 enabling me to make a difference to the lives of the women and children I will be with.

In the state of Haryana (where Faridabad is situated), equality is definitely not apparent. Only 66.8% of the women are literate therefore suggesting about a third are illiterate, and this is unacceptable. In the world we live in, I believe everyone should have the right to an education. In the schools and centres where the project is based, I will be privileged to increase the confidence of these women through a general presence, teaching literacy and grammar, and computer skills. It saddens me to know that the women I will be working with, will be around my age group, which increases my drive to want to empower, knowing my opportunities and experiences.

It is eye-opening that 7% of all children in India are orphans and I would so proud to actually be able to bring happiness to their day through either play a game, teaching them some English or even just having a chat with them. I will be volunteering across 3 orphanages, which all have inspiring motives. From educating young, crime-involved boys with vocational skills therefore giving them the opportunity to a school education to providing assistance and company to girls who would be looking for guidance on improving their literacy, English and computer skills.
