This January, I will be heading to India for my first volunteer trip! I will be volunteering in slum clinics in New Delhi with the International Volunteer Headquarters team.
In rural areas of India, preventative dentistry is not only severely overlooked and unaffordable to it's locals, it is completely unavailable. This is due to a high demand of dentists and dental health professionals, and a low supply. My purpose on this volunteer mission is to use my education as a dental hygienist, alongside my passion for making people feel comfortable, heard and cared for, to educate, motivate and promote oral health.
This is something that I knew I would be a part of since before I became a hygienist. However, this was not an easy decision to make based on the financial side. I learned quickly that it costs money to volunteer, but when you are volunteering in health care, it costs a lot more money. Between the volunteer fees, the IVHQ fees, the flights, the vaccines, the volunteer Visa, it adds up quickly.
I would greatly appreciate your support, whether it be financially, sharing this post, sending me recommendations, or simply wishing me luck.
