Volunteering in an orphanage in Ghana

Hello!

My name is Shannon and I have recently graduated from University with a first-class degree in Business. Last year I was offered an amazing experience to spend 10 days in Mumbai, working alongside businesses, as well as sightseeing and learning about the local culture. This experience was invaluable and I came away with a strong feeling that I wanted to help those in developing nations more directly. Therefore, I have decided to do some volunteering; combining helping others with my passion of working with children.

Since turning sixteen I have loved spending time with children and helping them with different aspects of life, including education. My experiences and previous employment in the UK has only accentuated my desire to volunteer in a new location and learn more about how cultures and societies differ. For me it is important to see children with smiles on their faces! I genuinely love helping children, and watching them grow and develop as individuals - it is one of the best feelings in the world!

I spent hours and hours researching the best way to make this happen. Plan My Gap Year was the company that had the best reviews as well some amazing opportunities in the form of unique projects. I was immediately drawn to the orphanage project in Kumasi, particularly as I felt that it encompassed everything that I wanted to experience and hopefully learn. In the orphanage, children are from all walks of life, and the fact that it is basic and under resourced means that they really depend on the assistance of volunteers. For me, I feel that a 6-week project will provide a real insight in to Ghanaian life, and seriously allow me to positively impact the lives of those I meet.
