Campaign Story
In February and March 2020 I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to volunteer in Sri Lanka on a mental health placement as part of my mental health nursing degree. My time out here will be spent observing and participating in mental health care in a range of community and hospital environments such as the National Institute for Mental Health hospital (the biggest MH hospital in Sri Lanka). Here I will learn about how mental health is treated physically such as through medication administration and ECT as well as psychologically through therapies and rehabilitation clinics. I will also be given the opportunity to work with the National Council for Mental Health which works to integrate those with mental health conditions back into the community after a period of time being unwell, again observing and participating in therapies and activities that promote mental wellbeing.
Although this includes only a snapshot of how I'll be spending my time in Sri Lanka I hope this reflects the rewarding and eye-opening experience this placement has to offer.
This placement is entirely self-funded. I have been working really hard to fund this placement, fitting in shifts around my degree. However, any donations from friends and family will go a long way
Thanks for all your help
