Volunteer Work at the Elephant Refuge in Petchaburi, Thailand

As a future veterinary student and lover of volunteer work, I'm asking for your help in achieving this amazing experience opportunity for my graduate studies and personal satisfaction. Since I have memory, I decided that my future was to be related to animal sciences and their preservation, but I've always looked my vocation as an access to help not only animals but also human lives; this way I would be able to apply an integral medicine and assist in public health. Last year I went to Lima, Peru, to help low-income families receive medical help, improvement in their communities and a variety of supplies for their hygiene; but now, in my last undergraduate year, I've been determined in going to a place where I could really support on my long-term concentration field, where animal wellness were critical and I could lend a hand on its development. I will be on my way to the oriental hemisphere on late June or the start of July of 2019. An estimate of costs is around the quantity stipulated ($5,000). It includes: Stay for a month ($1,000 per week), Flight tickets (Departure and Return for $500-$800 each), vaccinations, life expenses, etc. Since I'm from Puerto Rico, USA, I can't study veterinary medicine in my country, this means that I'll have to move to a different place if I really want this profession, taking over additional expenses in so short time. This is a little expensive for a full-time dedicated student like me and without your help this would not be possible.

The Elephant Refuge of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) organization is in Petchaburi, Thailand. Since 2001, it has rescued and nurtured back to health many mistreated elephants and wildlife from all over Thailand. Each elephant and wild animal has a sad abusive story and I would love to contribute to it with a happy ending. Historically, domestic elephants have been used predominantly in the logging industry, but after the ban on logging in 1989, most of them ended up being used within the tourist industry or have been used to make a living by begging on the streets of big cities like Bangkok. Unfortunately in Thailand, there are currently no laws to prevent this latter abuse and mistreatment. Capture of wild thai elephant population for domestic use has become a threat to wild populations where numbers have been seriously reduced to only its 3% extant, because of the long years of infancy and common use for tourism rather than breeding. Therefore, there is an urgent need to help these animals!

Como futuro estudiante de veterinaria y amante de los trabajos voluntarios, les pido su ayuda para lograr esta asombrosa oportunidad de experiencia para mis estudios graduados y satisfacción personal. Desde que tengo memoria, decidí que mi futuro estaría relacionado a las ciencias animales y la preservación de estos, pero siempre he visto mi vocación como un acceso a ayudar no solamente a los animales sino que a las vidas humanas también; de esta manera estaría siendo capaz de aplicar una medicina integral y asistir en la salud pública. El año pasado fui como voluntario a Lima, Perú, para ayudar a personas de escasos recursos recibir ayuda médica, mejoras en sus comunidades y una variedad de recursos para su higiene; pero ahora, en mi último año de estudios subgraduados, he decidido ir a un lugar donde pueda servir de ayuda a trabajos relacionados con mi área de concentración a largo plazo, donde el bienestar animal sea crítico y pueda colaborar con su desarrollo. Trazaré mi camino hacia el hemisferio oriental a finales de Junio o comienzos de Julio del 2019. El estimado de costos es alrededor de la cantidad estipulada ($5,000). Este incluye: Estadía por un mes ($1,000 por la semana), Pasajes de vuelos (Ida y Vuelta por $500-$800 cada uno), vacunas, gastos diarios, etc. Al ser de Puerto Rico, Estados Unidos, no puedo estudiar medicina veterinaria en mi país, lo cual significa que me tendré que mudar a otro lugar si de verdad quiero esta profesión, asumiendo gastos adicionales en tan poco tiempo. Esto es un poco caro para un estudiante dedicado a tiempo completo como yo y sin tu ayuda esto no podría ser posible.

La organización del Refugio de Elefantes de la Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) está localizada en Petchaburi, Tailandia. Desde 2001, esta ha rescatado y nutrido hasta estar saludables a muchos elefantes y animales de vida silvestre alrededor de toda Tailandia. Cada elefante y animal silvestre ha pasado por una historia triste y abusiva en la cual amaría contribuir para otorgarles un final feliz Históricamente, los elefantes domésticos habían sido utilizados mayormente para la industria relacionada a la explotación forestal, pero luego de la prohibición de dicha explotación en 1989, la mayoría terminó siendo utilizada para la industria del turismo o mendigos de limosnas en las calles de grandes ciudades como Bangkok. Desafortunadamente, en Tailandia actualmente no hay leyes que prevengan estos últimos abusos y maltratos. La captura de poblaciones de elefantes tailandeses para usos domésticos se ha vuelto un peligro para poblaciones salvajes donde los números han sido seriamente reducidos a solamente un 3% existente, por los largos años de infancia y uso común para turismo, más que la reproducción. Por lo tanto, ¡hay una urgente necesidad por ayudar a estos animales!
