Volunteer Fire Department – Virje Križovljansko

Greetings, My name is Stjepan Talan. I am 27 years old and am corresponding from the country of Croatia in Europe. The village in which I live is called Virje Križovljansko and is located in the county of Varazdin. Our village consists of 75 households, and about 260 people. Our volunteer fire department was organized in 1938 and, despite the fact that it operates in a small community, has thrived and now consists of 140 members. The volunteer fire department conducts an average of 4 to 5 interventions each year. Our members have consistently proven their courage and willingness to help, especially during the devastating floods that hit our area in 2012 and 2013. Our organization participates in competitions with men’s, women’s and children’s teams and consistently achieve excellent scores. All members volunteer their humanitarian help without ever being paid. Our company is also the sole organizer of social life in our village, including events such as fire fun events, fire soccer and fire volleyball competitions. As we prepare to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Virje Krizovljansko Volunteer Fire Department our wish is to buy a new fire truck. Our current truck is 25 years old and no longer meets modern standards of firefighting. We also need to update much of our fire-fighting equipment, which is very expensive. I ask all of you to help us achieve our dream of buying a new fire truck with which to help our citizens in distress more quickly and safely. The new vehicle would also be beneficial in the training of new members in fire drills, as well as in competitions. It would also encourage more young people to become involved in our society and help them become diligent, hard-working and honest citizens always willing to help someone in trouble.
