My name is Benjamin Powers, I am the President of The Association Of Latino And American Students (ALAS) at Miami University Hamilton. We are a student organization that strives to enlighten students and the community of the Latino and Hispanic culture through activities and events both on the Miami Hamilton Campus and within the community. ALAS organizes many events throughout the academic year and invites students, faculty, and the community. Our events consist of lectures, presentations, music, art, food, and live entertainment, all based around Hispanic/Latino culture. We also partner with Richard Allen Academy in which we encourage the young students to do well in school and show them that there are more opportunities after High School. Along with that, we also hold a yearly coat drive where we collect gently used coats and give them out to those who may need an extra layer in the cold winter months because we feel it is important to serve our community.
Our Motto is: “The Association of Latino and American Students (ALAS) includes and supports diversification within its organization and Miami. ALAS also demonstrates respect for individuality of all students. ALAS challenges their members to embrace opportunities to further their Miami experience along with challenging their members to grow within themselves in character and knowledge of the world around them.”
The Association Of Latino And American Students wants to go beyond the college campus and surrounding community. We believe it is vital that people make a difference around the world as well. ALAS is planning to take our members to a volunteer trip to Mérida, Mexico. We are partnering with a well established organization by the name of International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ). IVHQ organizes volunteer trips for individuals or groups. We decided to partner with this organization because we feel they match our same goals in making a difference around the world and can help us effectively execute those goals.
With this in mind, there are some financial challenges that we are facing. The university limits the use of funding we are given and we are not able to fully fund our volunteer trip with university funds. This trip would require us to travel internationally which can be expensive. Costs would include, but not limited to, Registration fees, Program fees, Airplane tickets, Rental Car Fees, Etc. The amount we need to raise is $23,000.
We would like to invite you to support our efforts in creating ALAS’s global impact and to make this project a reality. As a business that understands our local hispanic communities, we thought you might be interested in supporting our efforts. We would be happy to recognize your business’ contribution in our promotional materials and events.
Thank you for your consideration. Any contribution, no matter the size, will be greatly appreciated and used productively!
