Village teaching and Outreach Project, Uganda

Hi everyone! Next Summer 2014 I will be volunteering in a village in Uganda for a month-long teaching project, as part of the Global Volunteer Network (GVN)'s Village Teaching and Outreach program. This program gives us the rewarding opportunity to provide education for children in need - children who have sadly lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, help families to gain economic independence, and help to educate the community about health issues. Focusing on assisting village communities, we aim to encourage both economic and social development at a grassroots level, in an effort to make a long-term impact on the community. As volunteers, we will be engaging the children in arts and crafts, structured play, music/singing, sports, health, and academics - providing children with a loving, creative and interactive environment in which to flourish. These kids need love, attention, life skills, and education so they can have successful futures free from poverty and filled with the same opportunities as others.

Alongside teaching these children, the village community outreach program focuses on the general wellbeing and happiness of the local community. This includes youth mentoring, team building, HIV prevention and AIDS care, sanitation and hygiene, maintaining wells and other village infrastructure. Providing affection and support to these communities is possibly the most valuable form of help we are able to provide, and forms the foundation for social and economic development in these communities.

The success of such programs and ensuring the vital care of these children and families requires the help of many attentive volunteers. It also requires a supply of resources such as school equipment - textbooks and creative materials, that are necessary to allow the children to develop their skills and provide them with equal opportunities as others. Outreach projects are only feasible with materials and tools for infrastructure and therefore we hope you can donate generously to sponsor us volunteers and the provision of these projects which work to keep these marginalised communities healthy and happy.
