Veteran needs help -medical bills

After returning from my third tour of duty (two in Iraq on in Afghanistan) I retired from the miltitary after 33 years of service.  shortly after leaving the service I had a significant accident and then learned none of the medical bills would be covered; I was medically uninsured.

Two month after leaving the military I was working on my roof, doing it myelf to save money, and the ladder I was on shifted sending me on a twenty foot freefall to the ground.  I was transportd by lifeflight to an area hospital. The injuries were significnt and substantial. I had snapped one arm completely in half, broken six ribs (some in more than one place) puntured and collapsed a lung, and chipped or cracked bones in my back, hip and pevis. 

The medicl bills exceed $54,000.00.  I thought I was covered by military medicl insurance. Little did I know, because I was not active duty I lost all medical coverge the day I left the service.  There is no provision for continued medical insurance after retiring from the National Guard even though I served my country in three combet zone operations and was awarded multiplr bronze star medals.  I want to get bck to work and and hopeful I don't get financially crushed or forced into bankruptcy by the pending medical bills.
