Our Next Challenge is little baby Brenton the French Mastiff or Dogue de Bordeaux who is approx.. 4 weeks old!

He has a large hernia and an oesophageal dilation at the thoracic inlet which is a very unusual problem to find in a mammal of any type let alone for a little pup. He has had X-rays and is now waiting for expert opinion to see what is the best thing for him. Hopefully the prognosis will be good!

Dameka came to us as her owner had committed suicide, his family had taken here in but she kept escaping to find her way back home to wait for him to return. On one of the expeditions she was picked up by a volunteer and bought to Happy Paws Haven. We tried to find her family without much success. She was heavily pregnant so had her babies here and they all got loving homes. Then we found her a home but again she started escaping and on each occasion ended up back here or in the pound. We all decided that she would become one of my own dogs. There were two dogs next door which she loved to visit from time to time even though she had many friends here.

Yesterday morning at 4am she woke me as she always does, she licks my ear to say "mum it is time to wake up"! At about 4.20am she went over the back fence to our property and down to Geoff's. Les was awake but Geoff was not so she came home. I called her inside. Off she went again down to Geoffs it was 0530am this time but the back door was not open so she came back home again but this time down to the road instead of back across the paddock. She was on her way to see her mates next door when a car hit her.

She is now in hospital in a critical condition and we will not know until monday whether or not she will make it. She has been with us for just over 3 years, helping us with the orphaned puppies and socialising the cats and kittens. Please help us pay her vet bill and pay that she comes good so that she continues to live a healthy happy life.

Just been to see Dameka, she held her head up and had a teaspoon of food to eat. Her xrays show that she has 3 breaks in her pelvis, they are outside the weight bearing area, they are not displaced so she needs to be in cage for 6-8 weeks for the breaks to heal. Her bladder is intact, no damage could be seen to the ribcage, lungs, liver, spleen, bowel or kidneys but she has severe bruising which we will need to watch carefully. She is comfortable but without pain killers on board she would be in a lot of pain from the pelvis and the bruising. She can lift her head which is a good neurological sign but she is not out of the woods yet!

Just spoken to the on call vet at Riverbank Animal Hospital, her gums are improving, she has eaten some more. Things seem to be on the mend and we are now cautiously positive that all will be well! Thank you all for your support, we still have a way to go as she will be off her feet in a crate for 6-8 weeks so her hips can mend properly. The bruising is still very bad but hopefully the blood will absorb back and not become septic. She is on the way out of the woods and is in the best place to heal!

I hope you get the donations you need. You do an amazing job for these animals who would otherwise have nowhere to go.
