My heart is jumping with joy! We found a lovely shelter for Soweto in KZN and someone (an angel) offered to drive us there! Mazarat Animal Rescue have agreed to take Soweto in and nurse him back to health! They have a wonderful vet onsite who has already started to prepare the first course of medication for Soweto.

Mazarat Animal Rescue (https://mazaratanimalrescue.webs.com/) cover all their costs through donations and therefore this gogetfunding campaign will carry on running to cover Soweto's medical costs and everything over and above that will be donated to Mazarat for their amazing work. Your contribution will save the lives of many animals.

Thanks to everyone for their interest and advice over the past year, comforting Soweto and even making a honey and banana mix for his wounds! It will be fantastic to give you all good news in the near future.

Read Soweto's story below:

Running a backpackers in a rural village in the Wild Coast of South Africa, a guest found a lost puppy in the middle of the road and after looking for its mother and litter for days, Lizani had no other choice but to keep it. She named it Soweto Gold (after a local South African beer as his colors were the same as the colors on the label). As he was separated from its mother too soon, he did not get the necessary nutrients to build up his immune system. After a few weeks, Soweto started to show signs of mange and started losing his hair. Since then, not a day has passed where his skin did not burn or itch. Having had him for a year, they have tried every single thing that was recommended to them, from injections, to herbal medicine, to tablets, dips, vaseline and advice given by nature lovers. Absolutely nothing has worked.

Soweto needs great care and attention and to see a vet at least once a week, who will take a skin scrape, do tests and adjust his medication by monitoring his progress weekly. A vet will also be able to identify if he also has a chronic condition and it seems he does not produce the necessary oils that his skin needs for his fur to grow back. The nearest vet from the backpackers is 1.5 hours away and the vet is not always available. Lizani has taken Soweto to them before and was given injections, but this did not help in the least. In fact, things only got worse after that.

Soweto is now just over year old, a mixed breed, black with a thick fur (if it would only grow) and possibly has bloodhound in him if one looks at his ears. He is medium size and all he needs and asks for is love, cuddles and attention. Lizani has removed him from the other dogs and people as his mange seemed to get worse when being out and about. He is currently living in a fenced off area outside her room where she built a shelter for him, but it is terribly lonely there.
