As most of you know, my sister, Shannon and myself despise asking for help, but its not for us, its for our mom who was diagnosed with a terminal illness recently. This has all taken place in a a week and a half.

We have bills starting to come in and already have the CT Scan at Milnerton Mediclinic declined for payment through her medical aid. We are unsure as to whether the first MRI and CT Scan at Netcare will be paid either, we are hopeful it will be, but we have not received their bills as yet. Mom was readmitted to Milnerton after being discharged from Netcare and taken by ambulance to Milernton as Netcare was on divert and had no more beds. The only way to ascertain what was wrong this time was to perform another CT Scan which showed a new brain bleed on top of the existing tumor.

We would like our mom to come home and to be at peace in her own surroundings when the time comes which is inevitable. It could be weeks but no more than 3 months as per her Neurologist at Milnerton Mediclinic.

Timeline

20 Feb admitted to Netcare Blaauwberg (first seizure that evening)

23 Feb Diagnoisis - MRI - Stage 4 Gliolblastoma

27 Feb - came home with meds, still walking

28 Feb - stroke - bleeding into tumor - re-admitted

1 March - tumor grown by 20mm in 6 days - no more space in the brain to accommodate swelling

We now need to arrange a carer/nurse for mom with 24 hour care so she can go peacefully in her own surroundings & be with family. (This all excludes hiring a hospital bed, nappies, and various other meds she requires to make her comfortable)

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts if you are able to help in this situation.

Whatever funds are not used during the last of moms time here will be used for her memorial as she does not have a policy in place. (and as she has said numerous times to us, its a simple affair - tea and koeksisters in her beautiful garden)

Thanking you from Val, Angie, Shannon and family xx

  • Dear Angie and Shannon. I am so terribly sorry to hear this tragic news about Val, I just hope she does not suffer for too long! I wish I was in a better financial position to help more, but have donated R200 and will do more if able to at a later stage. I guess every cent helps! Please keep us all updated on the progress and hope that you manage to get her home and sorted as soon as possible. Lots of Love Lisa xxxxx

Mom is comfortable at home, with two amazing carers, that swop shifts every 6-7 days. We are so grateful that they are still operating under the strict Covid-19 lockdown regulations, but are legally essential services.Mom says she is happy, at peace, "nothing wrong with her" and is being very well. . . . .
