Valeriu Ghilețchi is a strong Christian who is running for president of Moldova. Throughout its 25 yrs. of independence from the Soviet Union, Moldova has struggled to thrive, due in a large part to widespread corruption and the lack of honest leadership.
I met Valeriu in Chisinau one day when he stopped by the Baptist Union, the main Evangelical denomination in the country. He is the past Bishop of the Baptist Union, past President of the European Baptist Federation, as well as the past Academic Dean of the Theological College in Chisinau, now Universitate Divitia Gratiea. He has a Ph.D. from Gordon-Conwell Seminary, though his first degree was in radio communications. And he is married with three children and two grandchildren :)
However, he sat down with the rest of the Baptist Union staff for lunch, and asked about who I was and my presence there. I had no idea who he was at the time. Later, I became friends with the family of his Parliamentary assistant, and always enjoyed hearing about how Mr. Ghiletchi was navigating the waters of politics. It is not easy, but he has held office for 7 years.
Every Christian that I know here respects him and his work. We would love to see Moldova have a strong leader, a man who is willing serve his people through the strength God provides. If you feel led to give, please do. Either way, please pray for Moldova's government!
