My wife Val Hayes needs a knee operation, as she is finding walking and even stilling and lying down increasingly painful. We thought we needed to pay about R7500 (about USS 570) for the operation, but only after she was already under anaesthetic were we informed that the anaesthetist's bill would be double that, and we would need to find another R16000.00 (about US$1081.00), making the amount about R23000.00 in all..
