Hello everyone ❤
My name is Zhassulan or, as my friends like to call me, Zhassik. I am a current first-year medical student in Nazarbayev University School of Medicine in Astana, Kazakhstan (US program-based medical school).
Despite I have just been enrolled at this institution, I already need to think about the upcoming exams, which not only are challenging but also are madly expensive.
Primarily, the exam of concern is US medical licensing exam (USMLE) for US medical residency admissions. Medical residency is a 3- to 7-years professional training for future physicians right after 4-year long medical school.
● The exam costs around 2550$. This is a huge sum of money for any average Kazakhstani family, since the local standard of living is at a relatively low level.
The link below is the official site of USMLE organizing company with exam costs.
● The closest examination center is in Europe which makes it even more difficult to register for the exam since it requires additional costs for travel and living hitting around 1000$ for every trip (different steps are usually taken during different years of medical school).
● Preparation to USMLE requires resourceful materials like that of UWorld question bank, which costs about 350$. The end of the link page https://uworld.com/step1/step1_home.aspx
●Lastly, the application to US Medical Residency programs costs about 2000$. Source https://ecuadoctors.com/costs-for-applying-to-medical-residency/
To date, I ended a 4-year long bachelor's program in biological sciences at Nazarbayev University with academic excellence distinction.
►Besides maintaining one of the top GPAs in the department of biological sciences, I was able to participate actively in the activities outside the academic curriculum. For example, multiple times I had long-term scientific internships. One of them took place at the University of Queensland in Australia during the summer 2018. Under the supervision of Dr. Irina Vetter, I explored the synergistic effect of snake venom and different opiods on the mouse spinal cord. Here is the photo of our research group.
International Genetic Engineering Machine competition (iGEM), our team worked
almost a year on creation of genetically engineered algae to clean rivers and
lakes contaminated with heavy metals. Our project was awarded with a Golden
medal with iGEM committee in MIT, Boston, US.
► In the November of
2017, I was a captain of the team that participated in International Biological
Universiade in Moscow State University (Russia). There we collectively earned
3rd place among dozens of other CIS teams.
I work very hard all the time to improve myself from one day to another and be closer to my life goals. I shared some of my achievements with you only for the sake of demonstrating this.
This exam is required to enroll US medical residency program. Even though I think that
medical professionals are very good in Kazakhstan too, I am convinced that the clinical experience at US will be in many ways unique and will allow me to return to my homecountry with a competely novel sets of knowledge and clinical skills. In its turn, this experience will directly benefit the patients in need - the ones for whom I devote everything I do.
I believe everyone understands that sometimes there are things beyond one's control and the only thing one could do in such a case is to take the maximum out of the situation. My instance is a financial difficulty in covering the costs of USMLE exams. Even when I save a part of personal earnings and salary, it is still not enough to gather the money I need in time (second half of 2020 to register for USMLE). So, I am here to ask for your HELP. While I will be putting all my efforts towards earning the whole sum of money by myself, I will appreciate your help with all my heart. If you are able to help me even with 1$, your contribution shall not be forgotten.
