Hello! Malaysian Golf Professional and member of the Asian Tour, Nicholas Fung here.
I am blessed to play golf for a living, however my ability to live (like many) has been significantly affected these past 12 months. Since March 2020, the Asian Tour has paused its tournaments leaving members without the possibility to play events. No scheduled events mean limited opportunities to earn an income.
I have work hard coming through the Asian Development Tour (winning the OOM in 2013) to becoming a regular member on the Asian Tour winning the Queens Cup in 2017 and playing co-sanctioned events with the European Tour and PGA Tour. Unfortunately, I have no categories on these latter tours meaning I must rely on invites. Invites are exceedingly difficult with the many golfers seeking the few spots available coupled with the ongoing challenge Tours are facing with frozen playing categories.
These past 12 months I have practiced hard without knowing when my next tournament is going to be and I have now made the decision to try and qualify for the US Open, Open Championship as well as head to Qualifying School to improve my playing opportunities. My previous world rankings (as high as 223) allow me to skip local qualifying and makes me directly exempt for final stage of US Open Qualifying on June 7 and just 36 holes away from playing at Torrey Pines a week later.
To get there however, I need some financial support and am hoping with a little help I can build on these past 12 months of practice and training to earn a spot in my first major and a full card at Q-school later in 2021.
