Last month while Jo Budden and I were at a conference in Athens we met an inspiring young volunteer teacher who lives and works at the Serres refugee camp, in northern Greece. We were bowled over by Francesca’s passion for the children she teaches. Her positive outlook more than makes up for a lack of basic resources most teachers take for granted. Jo and I asked what would make a difference to her classes and she said “a class set of mini whiteboards and a secure storage locker”. In the big scheme of things, that really isn’t much. So here we are, hoping that some of you will support us and help us to raise the 500 pounds needed.
A few words from Francesca:
“Our group, Lifting Hand International, has worked with the community of Serres refugee camp since August 2016. We have established a strong, harmonious connection with the camp residents and are fully committed to meeting the needs of the population. We have set up a community space in a field next to the camp where we provide kids’ activities and informal education. We are currently running several language classes for children, teenagers and adults.”
