Urgent Help Needed: A Teacher’s Fight against Leukemia

Update posted by Liway San Buenaventura On Apr 13, 2019

I am on a graveyard shift and I always make sure that after work I visit my Mom. When I visited her yesterday, I noticed that one of her eyes was partially red so I informed her nurse. The nurse told me that he will report it to the attending doctor — nothing was reported. Today when I went to the hospital after my shift, I noticed that one of eyes was completely red and it seems that she developed a cataract so I spoke directly to the attending resident doctor and that’s when they got alarmed. My mom will undergo series of tests again to check if there are complications. Hopefully, there will be none. Please continue to pray for my Mother; for her fast recovery and for her not to lose her eyesight.

Last Wednesday, we received another ‘Notice of Credit Suspension’ after we deposited 50,000.00 where they demanded to settle atleast 180,000.00 from the running bill of 275k. Unfortunately, we were unable to settle it within 24 hours from the time they sent the notice. Hence, they already stopped providing my mother medicines, supplies and performing laboratory tests unless we buy them through cash — only life support was left.

At first, we were devastated but we viewed things on the positive side. It was a blessing because we can now monitor the medicines and tests being provided to my Mom. The reasons why we chose not to settle the amount that the hospital demanded, aside from the fact that the money we raised was not yet enough to cover the amount, we want to ensure that we can still get help from PCSO and use the money raised for medicines that we can only buy outside the hospital.

Seeing my mother suffering from the severe pain brought by the infection was heart breaking and seeing the ‘Notice of Credit Suspension’ was a hope killer. We’re in the hospital for almost 14 days already and was demanded by the hospital to settle the above amount for them to continue providing medical services to my mother. The money raised was not yet enough to fund the said amount. We also need to buy 14 vials of Micafungin, outside the hospital, which costs 5500.00/vial = 77000.00. This thorned us apart—to settle the hospital bill or to buy the vials.

I hope that whoever reads this, will have the heart to help our family to get through this. Thank you!

We’re already on our second week at NKTI Hospital. This week and next week is the most critical stage of her chemotherapy where my mother should not incur any complications/infections that may delay her treatment. Her bone marrow is empty until next week so visitors are advised to visit on her 4th in the hospital to prevent any communicable diseases.

Unfortunately, she acquired an infection which was a severe one so she could not eat and even talk. She wants to eat but she couldn’t because her mouth was already full of sores which made it hard for her to eat and even drink her medicines. She had few instances of chills due to high fever, vomiting and acid reflux. The doctor did not expect that the infection would be severe so she had to insert bags of lipids and medicines through her dextrose.

In addition, our hospital bill continuous to increase. From the bottom of our hearts, we humbly ask for your help in any form as we continue our battle against Leukemia. Thank you in advance
