Just as his stars were finally aligning after a long journey, about to head off from South Africa on an amazing adventure to Thailand to set up an Organic Extraction factory, researching the healing properties of plant medicine, James Barclay (45) had a huge blow when he had an unexpected stroke. He is currently alone in a Government hospital and we are raising funds to move him to a private facility for his Stroke Rehabilitation.
James Barclay is a part of my soul, my Knight in Shining Armour (and sometimes a quirky ‘Idiot in Tin Foil!’) He is one of the most beautiful humans that ever graced this planet, he is funny, sensitive, kind and has a zest for life and a drive to succeed, along with an unwavering faith that he will reach his goals. He is loved by so many wonderful people. I seem to have become his Press Secretary, with all the loved ones following the updates on his condition so keenly!
He has a beautiful, intelligent 17 year old daughter and treats my two children (11 and 16) like they are his own. His sister Cindy will be coming up from Cape Town for some of his rehab and to help me. He is a Very Important Person.
The Backstory
I am not normally superstitious, but this past Friday 13th of November brought a ‘Stroke’ of bad luck...at the age of just 45 years old.
He was taken to a private facility on Thursday, the day before, due to massive balance issues, a fever and splitting headache, as well as difficulty focusing, staying awake, speaking and eating (Mr Unbreakable was Broken). He was diagnosed with a Bacterial infection, wheeled out (asleep) by me and driven home having been told ‘you worry when he has difficulty breathing’.
The next morning, Friday the 13th, he fell while trying to get to the bathroom.
He was due to leave Johannesburg, South Africa in September to pursue his dream business in Thailand, but due to the Covid19 Lockdown rules he was forced to remain in South Africa whilst awaiting additional documentation. He has no medical aid as he was supposed to have left, so I took him into a Government Hospital where he was diagnosed with a Stroke (Acute Cerebral Infarction and inflammation on the Brain). They have been fantastic, as far as we can tell, with his treatment, I just can't get much information out of anyone… He has pictures of his ‘Jimmy Appreciation Society’ on his railings so he can be reminded how many people have his back.
The Future
He will be ready to move to a Stroke Rehabilitation centre soon, when he is able to swallow.
We have not been told an expected duration for recovery but have been told ‘he has a long road ahead and it is up to him how long that is…’
Having no medical aid, he will be very likely to remain in the ward where he is for his recovery. The government do offer ‘Sub Acute’ facilities but they are few and far between, with long waiting lists and selecting certain patients only. Although the staff know the best thing for him would be to have loved ones visit, it is not allowed due to Covid regulations.
The Solution
I have found three excellent private facilities, both close to home where, with your help, he can be treated with the care he deserves, have visitors and get back on track swiftly. He needs to be moved in order to heal as soon as possible and continue the journey he embarked on.
On top of the facility, he will be receiving Neurofeedback to rebuild the connections in his brain or form new pathways, Acupuncture for pain and range of movement as well as Scio and Hyperbaric Therapy.
The Costs
Daily cost at the facility, including expected Meds, Doctors, PT, OT and Speech Therapy is R 6,700, we do not know if he will be in for 1 month, 3 months or 6 months. 120 days is expected to be R 804 000
Hyperbaric treatment expected to be 20 sessions for R 10,000
Neurofeedback expected to be 24 hours at R550 per hour including therapist's travel R 15 000.
Acupuncture expected to be 24 hours at R550 per hour (based on a local rate to be confirmed) R 13 200
Scio will be 3 sessions a week at R 850 a session, based on 4 months is R 40 800.
Alternative meds, oils etc R 20,000
Total: R 903,000 ($58,393.15)
First - URGENT - Milestone - To be able to move him to a Step Down facility: R240,300 <1 week
How YOU can help!
Any donation of any size that you can offer will be so gratefully received, EVERY bit helps, and we will ‘Pay It Forward’ once he’s back up and running. He is a proud and stubborn man and we fully expect that with your help, he will make a miraculous recovery.
Please also remember to share to your network of friends and family, whether you are able to donate or not, that could make all the difference!
If you need further information I will be happy to share what I have with you. Thank you so very much for helping rebuild my man and having him back home with me and the kids where he belongs, to recuperate before spreading his wings to Thailand!
I've set up a FaceBook page as well and will add some updates as time goes on, search for: "Jimmy Stroke Rehabilitation" https://www.facebook.com/Jimmy-Stroke-Rehabilitation-100666365218081/?view_public_for=100666365218081 if you'd like to follow
