Jelly Tots Educare is a creche in the community of Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay in Cape Town, South Africa. This center was established 10 years ago by Sophia Morris, an esteemed and beloved member of the community to meet a growing demand for safe learning environments for children in Imizamo Yethu.
Jelly Tots Educare promotes the holistic learning necessary for each child to develop to his or her full potential and to be adequately equipped with skills to succeed in their further education. Due to the high levels of poverty and unemployment in the township of Imizamo Yethu, Jelly Tots Educare aims to serve the community by providing high quality care, while charging the lowest educare services fees possible to meet the needs of financially challenged families.
Prior to the establishment of Jelly Tots Educare (and to this day) many children under the age of 5 in the township of Imizamo Yethu were not enrolled at any early childhood development center. As a result, these children had very little or no exposure to the pre-primary school education necessary to succeed in their academic pursuits later. To address this problem, Sophia Morris established Jelly Tots Educare in 2008, running it out of her house as an independent and private early childhood development care facility.
Being well aware of the social and economic challenges faced by most families in the community, it was clear to Sophia that to serve the community as she intended she would have to offer educare services at an affordable cost. As such, Jelly Tots Educare offers admission to learners at an extremely low cost of ZAR 200 per month. However, even at such a low cost, there are families that cannot afford the educare services fees. Nonetheless, Sophia decided that she would never turn a child away due to financial issues. True to this goal, Jelly Tots continues to admit children from families that cannot afford to pay fees.
Current Financial Situation
Currently, Jelly Tots Educare is operating at a significant monthly and annual financial loss, due to the low educare services fees as well as accepting children whose parents cannot afford to pay (full or even partial) fees. Operating at a significant financial loss over the past few years has led to the inability to maintain and complete the upgrade of facilities at Jelly Tots Educare.
This campaign serves to raise funds to assist Jelly Tots Educare with the following:
1. Resurfacing the outdoor play area with artificial turf / grass for a soft and safer surface for the children to play on.
2. Purchasing playground toys and equipment that are ideal for the limited space at the educare center.
3. Upgrading of the toilet and hand washing facilities to meet the minimum standards of government policy.
4. Secure the outdoor play area with a safety gate that meets the minimum standards of government policy.
