Donald J. Trump’s America was born on Inauguration day in a loud, angry, spasm that left storefronts shattered, a black stretch limo ablaze and public property destroyed in a several block area in the middle of the U.S. Capital.
Cops and protestors clashed, with riot police engaging the crowd with flash bang grenades, tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray. That was only part of the story, though. Throughout the day, peaceful demonstrations shut down streets and security checkpoints, as tens of thousands of Americans sent a message to their new president.
Meanwhile, his supporters were just as fervent, albeit in much smaller numbers than the inaugurations of his predecessor.
But it was a sea of pink knitted hats that engulfed the city in a warm, healing embrace the day after the inauguration as hundreds of thousands of women and men took to the streets to send a message of hope, inspiration and, yes, resistance to the divisive, sexist and fear mongering politics that marked Trump’s candidacy.
Many of DC's top street photographers joined together to document the inauguration of Donald J. Trump and the people’s response.
Our book, which was successfully funded in less than four days, will capture the raw emotion that flowed through the nation's capital, both in celebration and protest of Trump's ascendancy to the most powerful and important job in the world.
While some of the images from the three days of the inauguration will surely upset you, those are images that need to be seen and shared. But we also believe there will be just as many moments that will inspire you and give you hope.
If you came to town for the inauguration to participate in the Women's March on Washington or any of the other anti-inauguration events, or if you were only here in spirit, this is the book that will remind you what the fight is about.
