Hello, My name is Bradley. I am a proud US Air Force Veteran (two tours in War Zones after 9/11) and hard working citizen. About three years ago my family was turned upside down. My mother-in-law stole from her boss because she has a mental illness. My wife and I did not know about her stealing and mental illness before her attempted suicide. One fall day I get a phone call from my wife, she was hysterical on the other end. After 10 minutes of trying to get her to calm down she tells me that her mother is in the hospital. So I rush to the hospital, I arrived about 50 minutes later. The entire family is there and tell me she attempted suicide. Then I am told she has been stealing money from her boss for 10 years and he found out that morning. My mother-in-law’s boss is a personal injury lawyer and she was his only employee for the past ten years. That’s is when I realized the timing of her theft. It started around the time my father-in-law was laid off from his job at a lumberyard. My wife and I thought my mother-in-law was making a decent income to cover them through the lay-off. So we thought wrong. She was stealing from her bosses business account to cover the gap. So let’s forward to why I need help. I was at the hospital watching everyone fall apart because my mother-in-law, the matriarch was laying in a hospital bed recovering from nearly losing her life, meanwhile my wife’s phone would not stop ringing. I answered it and it was my mother-in-law’s boss. He was asking me to update him on my mother-in-laws condition. I thought he was concerned about her because she worked for him for 25 years, but I was wrong. I would later find out he was worried that if she died or did not help him, he would not be able to find out how much she stole. He had no idea the amount of money she stole and he was more concerned about the money and not her life. Later, we found out that his adult son (also a lawyer) and him interrogated my mother-in-law very aggressively. The interrogations was filled with threats against her family and her first grandchild, my daughter. So I asked him to contact me in the future and I would give him updates. That’s where I come into this story. So her boss now has suited the entire family because he couldn’t believe his secretary could best his “strong” intellect alone. So he thought we had a “criminal enterprise” and we all helped to steal from him. Imagine getting a summons from the court with your name, your wife’s name and your 6 years old daughter’s name on it. He suited my six year old daughter along with everyone in the family. Lucky, he doesn’t run the States Attorney office of Maryland. The Maryland States Attorney completed a 6 month investigation of my mother-in-law’s theft after she turned herself into the police. The Maryland States Attorney found she stole $1.1 million dollars over the tens years and found no one but her was involved. I know you are thinking 1 million dollars is a lifetime of money, and you are right. However, she used that money to supplement her household income, to help her elderly mother, elderly mother-in-law and to take care of her brother’s three kids. She did not use the $100k a year she stole to live beyond her $50k a year salary she earned. She was still somewhat struggling because everyone depended on her. Don’t get me wrong she deserved to go to jail for stealing because stealing is wrong but I understand why she started and never stopped until she was confronted by her boss. So her boss unsatisfied with her conviction, her order of restitution and his reimbursement by his business insurance wants more from her. Unfortunately, he can’t get anything more because she is in jail and her husband is bankrupt. So he goes after her family. After two years of missing work and lawyer fees around $26,500 dollars, my wife and I have to pay him an additional $383,188.48. Yes my wife and I have to pay him nearly $400k and we stole nothing. This is what a rich lawyer can get suiting someone because he can afford to pay a big lawyer firm to make up legal motions for two years. So I am now on the verge of financial crisis and I have to appeal this judgment to be able to keep my family afloat. I spoke to many lawyers and I was told that an appeal would definitely overturn the judgment. Please any amount could be life changing.
Thank you in advance for your help.My mother-in-law spend some time in a mental health facility and ultimately two years in jail. My father-in-law is working two jobs to pay the mortgage and the court ordered restitution.
