My name is Fibi Angel Mthembu and am from Durban, KZN. I am requesting your kind assistance with regards to a sponsorship for my studies at United World College Adriatic and I to inform you about the school and my resons for needing the funds.

My Request for Sponsorship

I have been awarded a place at UWC Adriatic in Italy to study a two-year pre-university International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. I applied for the programme since I have always achieved the highest grades in my classes since my primary schooling and with that, realised I could acquire internationally recognized Education and use my knowledge and wisdom to better future generations. I was selected and interviewed nationally among a group of students from other provinces and was fortunate to be awarded a full academic scholarship from the school. I however, still need to raise money which will go towards other expenses such as travel fees and also a monthly allowance which I will use for day to day necessities needed at the school. These costs will amount to roughly 40 000 (ZAR)/$3150.00 which I will need before my school year commences. UWC Adriatic will commence on the 24th of August 2018. Please support me by donating so that I can study and use my knowledge to better my country and the world. Your support will be much appreciated!

What is United World College?

UWC is a global educational movement which brings together students from all over the world to experience a challenging and transformative educational system. UWC education features high academic standards, outdoor activities and a strong emphasis on social and community service which is a fundamental importance at the college. The school was founded in 1962 during the Cold War by German educationalist Kurt Hahn as a way to create a more peaceful future. The UWC movement has over 60 000 alumni and 17 different colleges and schools in 17 different countries. Some examples include UWC Pearson College, UWC Costa Rica, UWC South East Asia and UWC Adriatic, which is where I’ve been accepted. All colleges are co-educational and residential and all have the same mission, values and ethos.

Academics

UWC Colleges follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum which is a university entrance examination with international validity. The IB is a two-year pre-university International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme which requires students to study a range of six subjects, three at higher level and three at subsidiary level and students are also required to follow a course in Theory of knowledge. The IB programme is challenging but exceptional because it provides a more in-depth understanding of subjects and requires you to think and fully understand topics. The IB is accepted by many universities around the world and therefore gives students more choices in terms of where they want to study.

Community service

Community and social service is of major importance at UWC as students learn to face challenges and difficulty in the service of others. Colleges work with the physically and mentally disabled, elderly and also socially disadvantaged and this allows students to develop empathy for others and teaches students to be humanitarians. This also allows students to discover new things about themselves as well as learning to care for others. Some colleges also have sea and land rescue teams and others offer services to the communities surrounding the school.

The Acceptance Procedure

There are National Selections Committees in over 155 countries worldwide which are tasked with selecting a diverse pool of students from different nations and backgrounds every year to attend UWC schools and colleges. In order to be awarded a place at a United World College applicants must go through regional and national interviews which include group activities as well as personal interviews held by the United World College South Africa Selections Committee on behalf of the United World College Trust of South Africa. Successful applicants who meet the criteria set by UWC will be awarded full, partial and unpaid places at a UWC college.

Thank you for taking the time to read and I would greatly appreciate any form of input and help!
