Unite to Rebuild – Save Notre Dame de Paris

A part of our European culture, history and identity is currently burning in front of our very eyes. Something that seemed obvious and inviolable to my generation, has been wiped off the face of the earth within - what compared to its construction time - was the blink of an eye.

I was brought up in love and appreciation of art, music, architecture and beauty, so today I feel as if a piece of my heart had been torn out, as if someone close to me had passed away. There is so much to be said and yet not enough words to express the heartbreak so many of us are experiencing. But words is not what we need right now.

Today is the farthest point in history we have known. Never before has technology, archiving and access to knowledge been so common. We have never had the opportunity to allocate funds as quickly and effectively as today. Never before has the average person been able to have such a big impact on the world - even its most remote corners.

On the screens of our TVs and computerswe observe flames absorbing what a couple of hours ago had been the pride of a whole continent and the potential reconstruction of Notre Dame seems to be a distant dream. Still, I believe that if we remember the 15th of April 2019 as the day on which Notre Dame went down in flames - the 16th will be the one we will remember as the first day of its reconstruction - in our hearts, in our minds and hopefully also in our deeds.

This fundraising campaign goes out to everyone who, like me, holds in their heart a spot for the beautiful cathedral that Notre Dame used to be. I wish to give whatever we will capable to raise to La Fondation Avenir du Patrimoine [The Future of Heritage Foundation in Paris], which "has a strong ambition: to restore to the churches of Paris all the splendor of their architecture and restore the original beauty of the works found there".
