I never thought I would find myself here.

I imagine that most of us feel that way right now.

But, my late mother taught me that asking for help isn't weakness; it's an opportunity to pay things forward in the future.

My name is Nothabo Sharon Mthi. l am the single parent of 4 year old, precocious and ever-curious, Captain. Things Captain loves:

  • bike riding
  • playing with friends
  • soccer!

Captain and I have had a rough few years. His father, despite my best efforts, has decided he doesn't want to know his son or provide any support for him. When I moved to the Eastern Cape back in 2018 to care for my ailing family it came at the price of my long-term job. With the passing of my parents, we were left completely alone. As a single parent, I made it my life's mission to give him the best opportunities I could - but sometimes this felt impossible.

Last year, after months of searching, I was finally able to get one of the few jobs available in my area at a local store. The pay was minimal, but enough to cover food and my transportation. Knowing that it wasn't enough for Captain's school costs, his uniform or any toys, I saved up some money to start importing and selling handbags with a friend. Things were starting to take off and it felt like we were finally making it!

Tragically, last Christmas, someone else saw an opportunity in our growing business, brutally attacking my friend, stealing all of our product and sending her to the ICU. The robbery left her with a spirit more damaged than her body and crippling medical bills. We lost everything, again.

It was time for a change.

In January, I found an opportunity at a great little Bed and Breakfast in Cape Town. Captain and I packed our bags and headed back to the city - full of hope and promise. The job offered great benefits and would finally give me the chance to send him to a highly rated school in the city.

Three weeks later, COVID-19 hit South Africa, and everything changed again.

The B&B despite their best efforts wasn't able to keep me on when they were forced to close their doors. Unfortunately, South Africa doesn't offer social programs to alleviate the struggle we now find ourselves in. Two weeks ago, I was dreaming of after school programming, a new bike and education opportunities that would help him have a life free of worry about where his next meal was coming from. Now, all I worry about is our next meal.

As this global crisis continues, I have little hope of providing my son with the life I'd dreamed of for him. So, I've started this funding page to seek your help. I know the world is uncertain, and money is tight, but anything you're able to give is a gift we will be forever grateful for. If you're unable to give, we understand, and hope you're able to share this page with your friends and family to spread the word.

Together, small actions can change the world - or at least the life of a soccer-loving, charismatic and hungry boy.

Sending you well wishes for health and safety wherever you are, with love.
