Hello i will try to be short and sweet with this. I am an elementary school teacher. I have 12 years experience working with children who have special needs, I'm special needs myself, I'm legally blind, which makes me a far better teacher for students with special needs. I earned my certificate in First Nations and Inutit Education from vcGill University in 2006. I began my certificate in Inclusive Education 2 years ago but funding was cut for the program (until just recently that is!)
My maternity/parental leave just finished and was refused an extension of leave by my employers. So I'm now officially unemployed. My job won't be held for me I will have to reapply for it when I do return. I will however be returning to school in the winter of 2015 to finish my certificate in inclusive education At McGill University, I have 7 courses left.
I am asking for your support for a new computer. The laptop I have is a 15" and it's oo small and I'm unable to make the screen bright enough to work. it's far too dark for me to see. I am fundraising for a 27" Mac desktop with peripherals and AppleCare. I had a very hard time doing homework on my laptop so this new one will take a lot less effort on my part. This will help me with my homework, and also, my biggest plan will be creating apps for the struggling readers.
I will also be creating apps that will teach the basics of our Mohawk language.which is threatened with extinction. We were able to get a Rosetta Stone program made for us, here's a link showing that our language is indeed threatened http://www.rosettastone.com/endangered/projects ....oh, it says that Rosetta Stone is being used in our schools, I cannot say what goes on in the other 2 schools in our system but the school I work in does not have it!!!
There are currently no apps for the iPad to learn Mohawk. Rosetta Stone has it's limits, it is only a multiple choice software....anyone can pick an answer! My apps will not only use a small amount of "multiple choice" but will be very interactive and also use following directions, learning through song (which is how we all learned language as a child). Providing answers....using social stories. my plans also include putting our stories on the ipad that will highlight words as a karaoke machine does.
My apps will first and foremost include our phonetics chart which is what our language is built upon. We have a great many resources at our cultural center and I will be using my new Apple Computer to put all of these into apps ...I have many plans that I cannot list them all here. The possibilities are endles just as my ideas for creating my own activities for phonics/sight words/phonemic awareness...etc
Our school system doesn't have Rosetta Stone as an additional means to teach language so I will make apps for that for use in all of our schools from kindergarten to grade 11!!! The school I worked in for the past 12 years has approximately 30 iPads and about 210 students. I will make fun apps for the Mohawk language. This will help divide the classroom into groups which makes teaching easier and more effective. I'm not sure how many iPads the other schools have but I will be making apps that have varying levels of language abilities.
Part of my job as a teacher was to research and test apps for our students and I have seen a lot of horrible apps. They weren't any fun, were not functional or just didn't make sense and had errors in them. I know where the apps are lacking and have many great ideas for creating apps.
As a teacher I've created many hands on activities for students to learn math and reading, so I know I have the creativity to make ipad apps and will not just benefit my own students but anyone with an apple device!
Thank you kindly for your support,
