Campaign Story
SUMMARY:
Tensions are rising as Congo-Brazaville has reportedly violently and brutally expelled more than 50,000 Congo-Kin citizens since April.
Initiated by "Operation Likofi," which was enacted by DRC security forces aimed at rounding up undesirable elements in around the capital city called "Kuluna" who had been responsible for home invasions, theft, gang beatings, and several other gang related activities. With Kinshasa and Brazzaville being the two closest capital cities in the world, it was inevitable that some of these people would cross over the Congo River to Brazzaville. The government of the Republic of Congo contends that there was an alarmingly sharp increase in gang related crimes from the moment these individuals arrived to their side of the River. In response, they began rounding up the alleged perpetrators and violently returning them back home due to their illegal status and their alleged participation in various criminal activities.
Despite this seemingly plausible explanation from the Congo -Brazza government, eyewitnesses accounts of Congo-Kin citizens being raped, burned, and murdered. Many who have made their home in Congo Brazza find themselves wrongly accused of being illegal and literally thrown out into the street with no where to go.The situation is becoming more and more desperate as 10s of thousands of men, women, and children have been affected. These are our brothers and sisters, and we cannot sidt idly by hoping that the government will finally do something. As the late great Mandela said, “our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.”
Now we are mobilizing to raise money to feed our displaced brothers and sisters. We are calling on each person in the community to give a minimum of $10 to go towards food, personal hygiene products, and blankets. It has been said that although we can’t do everything, we can do SOMETHING. It is very easy to be in the US, Europe, or Canada, and feel removed from what’s happening back home. Let us never forget our roots and the old proverb that says that a tree is only as strong as its roots. Surely, we can sacrifice and find a way to give at least $10.
