I will be travelling to Uganda on August 22nd 2014 to spend 6 weeks in Mulago National Referral Hospital, working in General Paediatrics, Acute Care and Paediatric Surgery. I am a medical student in the UK, and will have completed 3 out of 5 years of training by the time I travel to Uganda.

I need your help. I am raising money to help cover the costs of flights and acommodation, vaccinations, visas and all of the things that inevitably come with travelling abroad. Without donations, this life-changing expedition will be impossible. Uganda is a diverse country, with so much to offer its visitors. I have always wanted to  practice medicine in a developing country to experience healthcare where resources are scarce, and doctors and nurses have to be resourceful and rely on their experience and skills. I feel like they could teach me a lot, as the working conditions in Uganda are so much different from those in the UK. Ugandan citizens are affected by a range of different illnesses to those that we commonly see in the UK, and diseases such as HIV are far more common. I hope to come face to face with the individuals they affect on a daily basis, and learn from their experiences.

As well as learning a lot, I know i have a lot that I can contribute back. I look forward to being able to be hands on, both in the hospital and in community healthcare programmes, and aim to make a valuable addition to the medical team during my time in the hospital. Mulago Hospital is the referral centre for the entire country, and there is only a limited number of staff. People have to travel long distances to reach the hospital, and so are often much more sick than those who come to hospital in the UK. I will be able to travel out into local communities on vaccination programmes, and will help to bring healthcare directly to the poorest and most vulnerable people. I'll be keeping an online diary the entire time, so that anyone can follow my journey and see what their money has helped to create.

I absolutely love working with children, and will spend the majority of my time in the hospital on the children's wards. I hope to work in paediatrics in the future, and will bring with me all of my experiences from Uganda into my future career. I am certain that if you help me get to Uganda, unforgettable experiences await me.

Perhaps we can even begin to change the world; with small steps, one life at a time.
