Tygerberg Hospital (TBH) is the second largest Hospital in South Africa with +-1300 beds. The division of Cardiac Surgery performs +- 450 open heart surgery procedures and +-60 stab heart surgeries every year. In total +-750 cardiac and thoracic operative cases are completed annually.
The facility was officially opened in 1976, and since then minimal upgrades have been performed due to the general constraints on public health funding. The sheer number of patients that require medical care in the Public Sector Health system in South Africa cause a lot of strain on resources and direct patient care always takes priority above all else - as it should be, but which is often to the detriment of staff.
In TBH the Cardiac Surgery Unit prides itself in delivering the best care possible to all patients, with focus on personal interaction and individualized care. This, however places a lot of strain on the limited personnel who are working in the unit.
With this campaign we aim to raise funds to do some general renovations in the unit, which was last done in 1996 with the aid of private funding and donations. The areas will include nurses and doctors rest and eating areas, general nursing areas and patient rooms - depending on funds raised. This will not only create a better space for healthcare workers, but for patients as well. By keeping the morale of the staff up, it will undoubtedly result in better patient experience and care, with patients healing faster and recovering better!
