JOSHUA SOBOL: ART FROM THE ASHES

About the Project

We are developing a multimedia theater performance which will bring together stories from the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. There are many parallels between these tragedies, and we aim to use theater, dance, and music to explore the common collective trauma of these two peoples. Intended for international audiences, the production will be a cooperative effort with creators and performers from both Armenia and Israel.

Internationally renowned playwright Yehoshua Sobol, considered by many to be the greatest Israeli playwright of our generation, has agreed to write the play himself. This is a huge honor and we know that this talented writer will do full justice to the story we wish to tell. The goal of this fundraiser is to raise the first payment of 17,000 NIS so that Mr. Sobol can begin writing the play.

As creators who are socially and politically active, we feel that the initiation of this project is crucial. We are currently experiencing a historic global upheaval unlike anything we have seen before, and it would be tempting to put everything on hold, to freeze up and withdraw into ourselves.But we believe that now it is more important than ever before to continue telling stories and making art – especially art that unifies, that emphasizes our common humanity. In times of fear like these, there is always a danger of that fear being expressed through racism, xenophobia, and intolerance; stories like the one we wish to tell become even more relevant. As we make our way into an uncertain future, we must make sure our history is not forgotten; especially as we begin saying goodbye to the last generation of Holocaust survivors.

We know that almost everyone has been affected financially by the pandemic. We understand that money is tight, but every cent helps. If 500 people donate just 30 NIS (8$), we will be well on our way to seeing this project come to life. If our message speaks to you, please consider helping out in whatever way you’re able.

More About the Play

The Armenian people endured a genocide which ended in the murder and systematic destruction of almost 1.5 million people, who experienced horrors and persecution at the hands of the Turkish government. However, as a result of various political pressures, many countries have yet to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. Israel, despite the obvious historical and emotional connection it has to the tragedy, is among the countries who does not recognize the genocide. The cries of the Armenians over the years have gone unheard, and the lack of artistic memorialization regarding this subject is a distinct expression of the injustice.Outside of Armenia, it’s rare to see creative works inspired by stories from the genocide. We see an abundance of media worldwide memorializing the Jewish Holocaust, but the relationship between the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust is largely unexplored. However, the more we investigate, the more threads of connection we find between the two tragedies: from stories of the Armenia genocide that circulated in the ghettos of Poland, to Franz Werfel's book about the Armenian Genocide, which acted as a kind of intellectual survival guide in the ghettos and later inspired ghetto leaders in their revolt against the Nazis. But beyond the historical parallels and links, we are interested in exploring the underlying connection of two nations who share similar trauma.

אנחנו עובדים על פיתוח מחזה ישראלי/ ארמני, אשר מיועד לקהל בינלאומי. ההפקה שתקום לאחר כתיבת המחזה עצמו תהיה קו-פרודוקציה אשר תשלב בתוכה אומנים משתי המדינות - שחקנים, בימאים, רקדנים, מעצבים ומוזיקאים

המחזה יפגיש ויראה לראשונה סיפורים משואת העם הארמני והשפעתם על השואה אשר פקדה את יהודי אירופה עשרים שנה מאוחר יותר. בעזרת שפת התאטרון, נציג ונבחן לראשונה כיצד שתי הטרגדיות הללו השפיעו אחת על השנייה והקשרים שבינהן

את המחזה עצמו עתיד לכתוב מר. יהושע סובול, גדול מחזאי ישראל, אשר מחזותיו הרבים תרגמו והוצגו ברחבי העולם. זהו כבוד גדול עבורנו שמחזאי בסדר גודל כזה יהיה אמון על לספר את הסיפור בצורה הכי טובה, מכבדת ומרתקת כפי שרק הוא יודע לעשות

בתור יוצרים המעורבים חברתית ופוליטית אנו רואים חשיבות יתרה בפרויקט מסוג זה. אומנם העולם עצר מלכת בעקבות הווירוס המשתולל וההתכנסות הפנימית שלנו חוצה מגזרים וגבולות, אבל אנחנו מאמינים שהיצירה חייבת להימשך, הסיפורים חייבים להיות מסופרים והאומנות חייבת לחבר בין אנשים בתקופה קשה זו. אומנות המדגישה את השווה ולא את השונה בינינו, המקרבת בין הלבבות של כולם, במיוחד עכשיו כשהחשש והפחד גוברים, הגזענות מרימה את ראשה המכוער, חוסר הסבלנות לאחר, ולשונה גוברת, הסיפור שאנו עתידים לספר הוא רלוונטי יותר מתמיד. בעוד אנו צועדים לעתיד חדש שלא הכרנו כמותו, אל לנו לשכוח את סיפורי העבר שלנו, אל לנו לשכוח את מעט ניצולי השואה שעוד נותרו עמנו

אנו בהחלט מודעים למצב הכלכלי שאליו נקלענו כולנו בתקופה זו. אבל כל שקל הכי קטן יכול בהחלט לעזור

עוד על המחזה

העם הארמני עבר שואה, אשר בסיומה מספר קורבנות האדם התסכם בכמיליון וחצי מתים. הארמנים נרדפו, נרצחו והושמדו על-ידי השלטון התורכי. בעקבות הסכמים פוליטיים וכלכליים ברחבי העולם, שואת העם הארמני אינה מוכרת באופן רשמי בהרבה מהמדינות. כמו כן, בישראל, אין הכרה רשמית בשואת העם הארמני ,עובדה אשר מבהירה את גודל האבסורד, בהתחשב בעברו הלא רחוק של העם היהודי ובעברו ההיסטורי בכלל

חוסר צדק היסטורי זה, כלפי העם הארמני, בא לידי ביטוי גם במיעוט חומרים אומנותיים המדברים על הנושא וקשורים אליו. מחוץ לגבולות ארמניה, נדיר מאוד למצוא ביטוי אומנותי כלשהו אשר מנציח את גודל הזוועה. מנגד רוב מדינות העולם מזכירות ומבכות ומלמדות את שואת העם היהודי, כפי שכמובן צריך וחשוב לעשות

הקשר הקיים בין שואת הארמנים לשואת היהודים לא נדון כמעט אף פעם, אבל ככל שאנו מעמיקים את חקר הנושא, אנו מוצאים קוים המקשרים בין שני האסונות. סיפורים וספרים אשר נכתבו לאחר שואת הארמנים מצאו עצמם בידיים של מנהיגים יהודים ממספר גטאות שבפולין. סיפורים שהזהירו מהעומד לבוא. ספרו של פרנץ וורפל, ״ארבעים הימים של מוסה דאג״, שימש מאין מדריך הישרדות עבור ראשי גטו ורשה, ספר שעבר בחשאי מיד ליד. ספר שבעזרתו תכננו למרוד בנאצים וכך עשו

אבל מעבר לפרטים ההיסטוריים ונקודות ההשקה בין שני המקרים הללו, אנו בעיקר מחפשים ליצור הבנה והזדהות בין שני עמים אשר עברו את הנורא מכל ושותפות גורל טראגית וטראומתית המחברת בינהם
