Synopsis:
Upon hearing about her son’s fight in school, AILEEN (40) contacts her ex-husband GEORGE (45) for answers. When he ignores her, she decides to confront her spoilt son DANIEL (8) directly at his school instead. Desperate to reconnect with him, she lies to him to spend the day with her, leading to a chain of misadventures that would lead closer to the truth.

Director's Intentions:
I wanted to explore the relationship between a mother and her estranged son following a messy divorce, and how both parties deal with the complex emotions following such a tumultuous family affair.

When I first wrote the story, I was influenced by a childhood memory of something similar that happened to my family member. I remember as a child, I couldn’t fully fathom the idea of parents separating, much less the idea that one of them could be in love with a stranger. I constantly questioned what this meant for their family, and how different life would be like for them having to adapt to a new mother. As an adult now, I realised how difficult it would have been for their parents to explain such issues to a child.

This story revolves around themes of family, longevity and reconciliation, and I used the idea of the traditional Chinese dish, turtle soup, because it was both brutal but sentimental at the same time.

Risks and Challenges:
Being an indie film project without any big brands or sponsorship, the budget for making this short film has always been very tight. We actually shot 2 days already but because of extremely bad weather, we have yet to complete the film and are gunning for 1 more pickup day of shoot.

As a result of the delays and unforeseen costs caused by bad weather, the budget has been severely exceeding what we originally planned, and we're currently hoping for more funds to support the completion of this short film.

Director's Bio:
His short films have also screened both locally and internationally. When he was 19, his short film “Dreaming Kester” was selected for the 22nd Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF)’s Short Film category, making him the youngest finalist in the history of the festival at the time.

His short “三秒忠 (3 Seconds)" was selected for the Singapore Panorama section at the 25th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) 2014. It was also screened at Portland Asian Film Festival 2015, Asian Film Festival Italy 2015 and Asian Film Focus, 2016.

In 2017, he was featured in FEMALE Magazine as one of the up and coming directors of New Wave Cinema in Singapore. In 2019, he was also commissioned by NOISE GIFFEST to produce a video installation and was featured by Facebook as one of their Next Story Creators.

In 2020, he was commissioned by Mastercard to create a new dance film for their Mastercard Experience Centre.

Most recently, he collaborated with Pink Dot to create a music video, “Singapura Queens”, featuring 9 local drag queens for their annual LGBTQIA+ event. The MV won a bronze at the Gong Awards 2021. In the same competition, his commercial for Sentosa, “Island Boy” also bagged 2 Silver and 2 Bronze awards.
