Hi! I'm Ophelia and I'm raising money to join a turtle conservation project in Sri Lanka for three weeks in August 2018. It's a small project run by locals, so they need all the volunteers they can get to keep it up and running. Last year, the project saw the release of 8,000 baby sea turtles into the sea as well as 30 older females. Many of the turtle species that I would be working with would be critically endangered, including the Hawksbill, Green, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles. Sea turtles in Sri Lanka have to struggle against the threat of commercial fishing nets, illegal trafficking, pollution and loss of habitat and there is great demand for turtle meat, eggs and shells. I will be responsible for helping to clean and refill turtle tanks, feeding and cleaning turtles, fishing for food for the turtles, cleaning the beaches for rubbish and going on night patrols to help deter any potential predators. Our volunteer group will also help to educate locals and tourists about the work that the conservation project is doing and we will be visiting local pre-schools to help raise awareness. Any donations of any size are welcome and they will go towards a brilliant cause! Thank you!
