Turning a Hobby into a Career

My name is Andrea Muscat and I am based on the small island nation of Malta. I am a 24 year old B.Sc. (Hons) Earth Systems graduate. Part of my course was on meteorology. I have been interested in the weather for as long as I can remember. Back when I was 17, I launched a facebook page as a mere 'hobby'. I wanted to create a place where I could make use of my expertise in the field of meteorology to provide the general public with weather services. Little did I know that this would become one of the leading weather service providers in Malta. The hard work put into the page was recognised by the community several times. Over the past years the page has come 1st in the Malta Social Media Awards of 2014 and was awarded the Għarb Gozitan Cultural Award of 2015. Interviews with the admin were featured in several leading news outlets. As the page continued growing, the need to re-brand and expand the service became more obvious. Called Maltese Islands Weather, weather services are provided through a facebook page and a newly-launched website. 7 years later, it is still being run as a hobby. Little or no profit is made from it. My dream is to turn my interest in meteorology into a major career. I intend to do this through the development of an app for both iOS and Android. Meanwhile, I am working a number of jobs trying to save money for the app's construction. Now, I am considering the possibility of partly covering the expenses through crowdfunding too. I have never used crowdfunding before, and this is a leap into the unknown for me. The app will be used to provide services similar to the ones on the website along with a system of notifications.
