Hello to everyone,

I'm writing this as a last resort, as I'm feeling so sad as my wife's 50th birthday approaches.

We first met in 1979 when she was barely sixteen. She was on vacation with a friend and was staying in the French village where I used to live. We fell in love but being so young and from such different backgrounds our paths went separate ways. However, 30 years later I managed to find out where she was living and wrote to her to find out how she was doing (I'd never forgotten her). It turned out that she, like me, had got married and divorced and was now alone. We finally met up a couple of years later and despite all the years that had gone by the spark was still there! That was in 2008. In 2009 we got married and it was the happiest day of my life.

Having to start out again in life hasn't been easy. We'd both suffered from painful divorces (emotionally and financially) but last year we managed to buy a little house where we live with my grown-up son and my wife's parents, who are in their 90s. We would have loved to have started our own family but our age of course is against us and our efforts to adopt have been unsuccessful mainly due to the costs involved.

I recently retrained to be a nursing assistant and love my job (I previously was a stone mason from the age of 16 but for health reasons could not continue). I'm fortunate enough to be starting a new job in our local hospital in July. I've been doing a lot of temporary work over the last few months (days and nights) trying to raise funds to take my lovely wife away for a break for her 50th birthday. Unfortunately she has not had much work of late (she works from home) and I have to face it -  we just can't afford it. My 21-year son has had a few issues too so it's been a tough time for both of us.

I don't want this to sound like a sob-story but if there is any chance at all that I might be able to surprise my wife with a trip then I'm ready to wear my heart on my sleeve. She gave me such a beautiful birthday party when I turned 50 two years ago and put so much time and effort into the preparations.

Her birthday is in September so time is running short - this is my last hope. I can't offer you much in return other than thank you from the bottom of my heart and if the trip does become a reality, then a postcard to you to thank you personally for your help in making my dream come true.

Sorry this has been a bit long but I wanted to share our story with you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Take care,

Pascal
