Hello, my name is Trevor and I have had the amazing opportunity to be part of a very select group of students participating in a program dedicated to philanthropy. This course, offered by Main Street Philanthropy, is a ten-week course in which we examine non-profit organizations, philanthropists, and charities to see how they are run. This course has opened my eyes to the variety of opportunities within the non-profit world. It has also helped me to discover charities that matched my interests and are involved in activities that I am passionate about. We had many different assignments in which we spoke to these non-profit organizations, analyzed data collected, and decided which non-profit would be the best recipient of funds as donations. My final assignment of this eye-opening project is to obtain donations from family and friends to present a check to my selected charity.
While at a weekly retreat, I had the life changing opportunity of being able to work with kids who were physically or mentally disabled. I taught, helped, and became great friends with these kids; I even learned sign language! The most memorable experience from that trip was when two friends and I carried a few of the physically disabled kids all the way to the top of a mountain near the camp before dawn. As we reached the top the kids began to make noises of joy as they felt that, although they needed help, they accomplished something amazing. We held those kids in our arms as the sun rose and shared the most breathtaking view of North Carolina that I had ever seen. Seeing the awe and joy in those kids’ faces made me realize that there is more to life than just me and it became my passion to help kids like them in my local area. It became my goal to provide this kind of amazing moment to other kids who are disabled.
My charity is the Association for Retarded Citizens and I hope you can help me meet my fundraising goal of $500. Any amount of money will help, I appreciate anything! My mom has offered a $250 matching grant...and with only 11 days to get donations I think she is hoping her money is safe!!
