60 km Trekking: Mestia to Ushguli: A fundraiser for Thermokitida Agapis

Who we are? We are Antigoni and Hannah, two friends who enjoy hiking, nature, and love to give back to our community. This July, we will be travelling to Georgia, and we will challenge ourselves to trek from Mestia to Ushguli in hopes of raising funds to support Thermokitida Agapis.

About the Route: The trek from Mestia to Ushguli is the most popular multi-day hike in Georgia, located in the upper Svaneti region of Georgia and is one of the most spectacular parts of the Caucasus Mountain range. The picturesque medieval-style Svan villages of the region form part of UNESCO World Heritage Site that has long been preserved naturally by its isolation. The total distance of the route we will be taking is 60 km and the difficulty is rated moderate with the highest point being Chkhunderi Pass at 2655m. We will attempt to do the hike in 3-4 days, and we will be staying at guesthouses in these remote villages to support the locals.

About the Cause: Thermokoitida Agapis is a non-governmental voluntary organization founded in 2011 by people who believe that human life and human personality must be treated in full respect from the moment of birth and that the institution of the family and the relationship of mother and father and child is essential to develop a healthy and whole person. These principles guide the activities of the Association, Newborns, Premature or not in need of medical and paramedical care are considered as people from the first day of their lives. People with feelings, with needs, with boundaries and sensitivities. Respect to these characteristics of the newborns and raise awareness of all those involved in their case is the main goal of our Association. To achieve this goal, the organisation is developing a series of actions such as promotion of knowledge and awareness of the health problems of infants and particularities of premature babies at all stages of life, confrontation of social, psychological and economic problems, of the patient and the family, resulting from neonatal disorders, communication and cooperation with similar associations abroad and organising events on perinatal care.
