I work for the South African Police service. I have been serving as a Station Commander, immersed in different townships in Gauteng, for the past 14 years. In my day to day activities, I interact with a lot of women who are victims of abuse, domestic violence and other social ills. I see how these women have limited options in the justice system because they are financially dependent on their perpetrators.
They might report a case, but usually they'll be back to withdraw it because they need their abusers access to resources. This cycle needs to end. As a society, it is our responsibility to ensure that girls get the education they need to gain their independence from patriarchal circumstances that hold them back. Starting with providing them with sanitary towels so they don't have to miss school while they menstruate.
2018 is the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth. This campaign is an effort to take inspiration from his amazing example & make a meaningful change in the lives of young women in South African schools who experience challenges with their monthly cycles.
The Imbumba Foundation hosts an annual #Trek4Mandela which aims to raise funds to provide young women with sanitary towels sothey don't have to miss a day of school. The hike is part of Imbumba's "Caring for Girls" campaign that raises awareness for the plight of young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to stay in school.
I joined this climb and campaign as an extension of my police work & commitment to serve in disadvantaged communities. This challenge is perfect for me because it allows me to fill up my cup by continually challenge myself physically, so I can pour my resources into helping young women have a brighter future. I've completed one Comrades Marathon before, so I'm up for the challenge!
Please pledge your support by donating money to make my dream come true & to help young girls stay in school. Follow my campaign to receive updates of my journey to Kilimanjaro, send encouraging messages - every little bit counts!
